Where Does Rattan Come From? Harvesting & Sustainability

The Short Answer
Rattan is a climbing palm — not a tree and not bamboo — that grows wild and on plantations throughout the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, with Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam among the largest sources. It's harvested by cutting mature canes from the forest (or a managed plantation), curing and straightening them, then splitting or peeling them into the cores and strips that become furniture frames and weaving material. Rattan itself is a renewable, fast-regenerating resource, but "sustainable" depends heavily on how and where it's harvested — wild-collected rattan pulled from healthy, managed forest is a different supply chain than rattan harvested illegally from protected land, and the finished furniture rarely says which one you're getting.
What Rattan Actually Is, Botanically
Rattan belongs to a group of climbing palms in the subfamily Calamoideae, with the genus Calamus supplying most of what ends up in furniture. Unlike a tree, rattan doesn't stand on its own — it grows as a vine, using spiny tendrils to hook onto host trees and climb toward the forest canopy for light. Individual canes get extraordinarily long as they wind through the surrounding vegetation; lengths approaching 200 meters have been reported for some Calamus species, making rattan one of the longest-stemmed plants on record.
This is also where the confusion with bamboo usually starts. Bamboo is a grass with a hollow, segmented stem; rattan is a palm with a solid core. Where Rattan Grows
Rattan palms are native to tropical rainforest across Southeast Asia, parts of South Asia, China, and Africa, but the commercial supply chain is concentrated in a handful of countries:
- Indonesia supplies the large majority of the world's raw rattan by most trade estimates, thanks to its extensive tropical forest cover across Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi.
- The Philippines has a long-established rattan furniture and handicraft industry, particularly around Cebu, and draws on both wild stock and cultivated supply.
- Vietnam has a well-known rattan and bamboo weaving tradition centered on craft villages around Hanoi's outskirts — Phu Vinh, in Chuong My district southwest of the city, is the most frequently cited — feeding both domestic furniture makers and export.
- Malaysia, Myanmar, and Cambodia also produce commercial rattan, at smaller scale than Indonesia or the Philippines.
- China is less a growing region than a major processing and manufacturing hub, importing raw and semi-processed cane for finishing into furniture.
A single finished piece can easily involve more than one country — a cane grown in Indonesia, cut and cured locally, then shipped elsewhere for weaving and assembly — which is one reason "rattan furniture" rarely comes with a clean, single-origin story the way, say, a wine label might.
How Rattan Is Harvested
Traditional rattan harvesting is manual and relatively low-impact compared to logging, since it doesn't require clearing the forest — only the vine itself is removed, and the host trees are left standing.
Cutting mature canes. Harvesters look for canes that have reached usable maturity, which generally takes five to ten years depending on species and growing conditions. Cutting immature canes produces weaker, more brittle material and is one of the main quality problems in poorly managed harvesting.
Pulling and hauling. Because canes climb high into the canopy and are covered in sharp spines, freeing a cut cane from the surrounding vegetation and hauling it out of the forest is physically demanding work, often done by hand in areas with limited road access.
Curing. Fresh-cut rattan contains natural sugars and moisture that attract insects and fungal staining if left untreated. Curing methods vary by region and species: controlled drying, sometimes combined with light smoking or a brief boil, stabilizes the cane before it's sold or processed further.
Straightening and grading. Cured canes are often naturally bowed or kinked from their climbing growth. Processors apply heat, traditionally over a flame or hot sand, to soften the cane just enough to straighten it, then sort canes by diameter and quality grade.
From there, canes are either sold whole — for bent-frame furniture — or split into their two commercial products. The peeled outer skin becomes cane, the glossy, hard-wearing material used for caning: chair seats, cabinet-door panels, and the pressed sheet cane sold by the roll. What's left underneath, the solid inner cylinder, is milled into rattan core (also called reed), the softer material that most woven wicker is actually made from. Core isn't a leftover — it's a major traded commodity in its own right, sold in standard diameters and profiles for weaving and basketry.
Is Rattan Sustainable?
This is the honest, complicated answer, because it depends on which part of the supply chain you're asking about.
In its favor: rattan is a non-timber forest product, meaning harvest doesn't require cutting down trees. A rattan vine can be removed from a forest while the surrounding canopy stays intact, and because it's a vine rather than a slow-growing hardwood, it regenerates faster than the tropical timber it often gets compared to. In areas where rattan harvesting is well managed, it can even give local communities a direct economic reason to keep forest standing rather than clear it for other uses.
The real risks: demand has outpaced sustainable wild supply in parts of Southeast Asia, leading to overharvesting — including cutting canes before they mature — and, in some cases, illegal harvesting from protected forest. Because rattan depends on healthy host trees to climb, broader deforestation for logging, agriculture, or plantations reduces the habitat rattan needs even when the vine itself isn't directly targeted.
What's changing: cultivated rattan, grown on managed plantations or as an agroforestry crop alongside other trees, is an increasingly significant part of the supply in Indonesia and the Philippines, easing some of the pressure on wild stock. Neither category is inherently "bad" — a well-managed wild harvest can be perfectly sustainable, and a poorly run plantation isn't automatically better. But almost no furniture label tells you which one you're buying, so it's worth being skeptical of marketing language like "eco-friendly" or "natural" used on its own.
From Raw Cane to Finished Furniture
Once cured, straightened, and graded, rattan moves through a few more stages before it's furniture:
- Frame-bending, for pieces that use whole cane, steamed again and bent around forms to create curved chair backs, headboards, and arms.
- Peeling and splitting, separating the skin into cane for caning work and the inner cylinder into core for weaving.
- Weaving, done by hand on higher-quality pieces and increasingly assisted by machine on mass-market furniture, which affects both price and the tightness/evenness of the finished weave.

What This Means When You're Buying
Since the sourcing story usually isn't printed on the tag, a few things are worth doing instead:
- Ask where a retailer sources its rattan, even if the answer is general rather than specific. A retailer that can't or won't say anything about origin is a weaker signal than one that names a country or supplier relationship, even loosely.
- Don't assume "natural" or "eco" language on its own means anything — without a specific claim about sourcing or certification behind it, those words are marketing, not evidence.
- Judge the finished piece on construction, not the sustainability story, since verifying the harvest practices behind a specific chair usually isn't realistic for an individual buyer. Solid joinery and a well-finished frame at least tell you the material was worth the effort to work with properly.
Bottom Line
Rattan comes from a genuinely renewable resource — a fast-growing climbing palm harvested mainly across Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam — and, done well, it's one of the lower-impact materials in home furnishings because it doesn't require felling the forest it grows in. But "genuinely renewable" and "sustainably harvested in this specific case" aren't the same claim.
